Mix Hostel in Chengdu Sichuan

I’m doing a 16 hours long trip by train from Xian to Sichuan province capital, Chengdu. Unluckly I had to sit the whole time because I couldn’t get the hard sleeper ticket. During the day, the views outside the window are stunning however I really want to get off. The only entertainment is provided by a 3 years old chineese girl traveling with her mom and her uncle. She’s making funny faces to my laptop web cam. Finally my long awaited arrival to Chengdu happened. What a relief.

It was very late at night and I decided to go to hostel that I previously picked from a LP guide. It was the MIX HOSTEL. Taxi drivers didn’t want to take me there because it was to close to train station. Eventually one agreed to go there.

At night the hostel is hardly visible behind the trees but the sign is there. There was no problem with checking in at such a late hour. I took a bargain 4-bed dorm for 30 RMB.
Some of the facilities that I like include free hot and cold drinking water on each floor, movie library, facebook enabled computers, obviously free wifi, games, books, and meny others. More info on that can be found on Mix Hostel website. The website is very informative and fun, it’s one of the best hostel websites I’ve seen.

But to be honest this hostel is very similar to other hostels in China in terms of facilities.

What really makes it stand out from the rest is some additional features and human factor.

In Mix Hostel you can participate in Panda Volunteer Project where you go to Chengdu’s Panda Center to take care of little pandas. You can choose the duration of your stay there up to 6 days.
Daily Panda Trip is also available.

The owner Mix is the best person to talk about Yangtze River Cruise, he’ll tell you how to do it to get the most of it and where to go to avoid crouds. He also knows everything about the whole Southern Silk Road.

Tibet Permit and Trip services available.

There is a lot of free activities during the week, every week. There is free night bike tour of Chengdu, I highly reccomend to do that.
Free cooking classes, Jiuzhaigou National Park Tour, Lashan Budda Trip.

The stuff definetley knows what it’s all about in backpacking world.
This hostel is ideal as a base for exploring Sichuan and Southern China.
